In the wise words of singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, “times, they are a-changin’” and Winnipeg Studio Theatre (WST) are ready for it!
Inspired by the original 1936 cult film of the same name, Reefer Madness, The Musical kicks off WST’s new season with a tongue-in-cheek look at the hysteria caused when clean-cut kids fall prey to marijuana. Sounding frighteningly similar to many modern-day headlines, show Director Kayla Gordon, says producing the show couldn’t have come at a better time with the nation-wide legalization on October 17th.
“The musical tells the story of a young American named Jimmy Harper (Josh Bellan) and his hometown sweetheart Mary Lane (Emily Meadows) who are lured into the world of the “The Stuff” (aka “Demon Weed”) by the dastardly Jack Stone (Kevin Aichele) and his crew at the local reefer den,” Kayla explains. “The Lecturer (Darren Martens) narrates the story of the two innocent teenagers as they get swept deeper into the zany world of Mae the den mother (Connie Manfredi), the student-done-bad Ralph (Aidan Ritchie), sex-crazed Sally (Brittany Hunter) and the rest of the 16-member all-Manitoba cast.”
Kayla is thrilled to have such an incredible, homegrown cast on-board and she is confident the over the top, hilarious storyline will give the audience a little nostalgia as well as a good time.
“Reefer Madness, the Musical is a crossover of ‘Leave it to Beaver’ meets ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ that pokes fun at the reactions people have to what is going on around them. We hope the subject matter will make people laugh, but also make them think about the marijuana madness around us!”
Don’t miss this musical marijuana satire…complete with munchies.
