WST’s production of Reefer Madness is sure to stire the “pot”

With less than three weeks to go until Winnipeg Studio Theatre (WST) opens Reefer Madness: The Musical, the “madness” of the Canadian cannabis legalization continues, and the timing couldn’t be better!

A satirical show like “Reefer Madness” is obviously topical due to the recent legalization, but a number of the show’s other themes are extremely relevant in today’s political climate,” says Emily Meadows, who takes on the role of “Mary Lane” in the production.

Whether or not audiences are familiar with the musical and/or the original 1936 cult film of the same name, the themes throughout the musical will feel very familiar. Themes like fake news, scare mongering tactics from those in power, and the fear of what we don’t understand layers the script throughout.

In today’s world and over time, says Emily, “leaders who preach propaganda, prejudice and hate create an atmosphere of animosity and intolerance. Nothing unites a group of people quite like a common “enemy”, even if that enemy has been fabricated and hyperbolized by a leader.” We hope the show will remind the audiences to question their actions and to consistently take a look at their own views & values within our ever-evolving society.”
